This guideline provides advice on the application of sound geotechnical engineering practice in open pit mines.
The intent of this guideline is to provide examples of good geotechnical engineering practice and to assist mining operators in achieving compliance with Regulation 13.8 of the Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995. This guideline seeks to encourage the application of current geotechnical knowledge, methodology, instrumentation, and ground support and reinforcement techniques and hardware to the practical solution of geotechnical engineering issues in open pit mining. In situations where the current level of geotechnical knowledge and/or technology does not satisfy the needs of the problem at hand, further research and development work is encouraged.
